Our Family
Here since 1984
Our parents opened this place in 1984. They chose the quiet end of the beach — the end where the sand runs out and the hill begins — and built something small there, fifty metres above the water.
We are their children, and we run it now. That is most of the story, and we think it is the important part: the same family, on the same hillside, a generation further along. The building has changed more than we have. The rooms have been renovated, whitewashed and rebuilt under their bamboo ceilings, and every year something else gets put right. What has not changed is who hands you the key.
We are a music-loving family. That is why there are instruments in the lobby, and a piano among them. They are not decoration. If you play — well or badly, it genuinely doesn't matter — they are yours for the evening, and we would rather hear them than not.
The kitchen works the same way. There is no printed menu for the season, because we cook what the morning brought: what the market had, what the boats brought in, what is ripe. It is the family table, made longer. Some of the recipes came down from our parents and have not been improved since, which we take as a sign that they were right the first time.
A good number of the people who come in summer have been coming for years — some of them since they were children themselves, and now with children of their own. They know where the good shade is. They know which balcony they want. We have watched families grow up over a fortnight a year, and it is the part of this work we would not trade.
If you come, you will meet us. We are the ones at reception, in the kitchen, carrying plates out to the garden. Come and find us — and if you play, the piano is right there.
